Guruvayur: History of the Place

  • Guruvayur
  • Kerala

Guruvayur has an ancient history due to a lake Rudra-Tirtha or sanctified lake of Lord Siva. Its history goes back to Satyayuga where Prachetas (mentioned in the fourth canto of Srimad Bhagavatam) came here to perform austerities with Lord Siva. At that time this Rudra-Tirtha was surrounded by nice trees, swans, cranes and many other categories of birds. There was also many groves filled with creepers and Lord Siva was also meditating there. Seeing this the Prachetas meditated with Lord Siva for 10,000 years to receive the blessings of Lord Sri Visnu. Lord Siva sang a song to Prachetas called the Rutra-Gita which Prachetas repeated. Lord Visnu appeared to them on Garuda and blessed them with their desired goal. This lake of Lord Siva still exists and before seeing the Lord the pilgrims take a bath. Lord Krsna in Guruvayur has four arms and He is named here as Guruvayurappa.

—Sri Dhari Tika, 35

“The purpose of going to holy places should be to associate with great saintly persons because by the influence of their association, one develops the taste to hear the transcendental vibration of Krsna. By seeing saintly person, by touching the saintly person, or by hearing him speak, one develops great faith in the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When faith is developed, one thinks, ‘Oh, let me hear what subject this saintly person is talking about.’ At that time, while listening to the transcendental narration of Supreme Lord Sri Hari, one manifests a taste for serving the Supreme Lord. In other words, by listening to great saintly person, one immediately develops the taste in his heart for serving the Lord.”
